A young Israeli student was shot dead Tuesday near the city of Yatta, a town about 120 miles northwest of Tel Aviv.
Abdel Kadri Shaleh, 20, of the Kishim neighborhood of Yatta, was fatally shot when police discovered a rifle he was carrying on his head outside his residence in the village, reports told the Yediot Ahronot newspaper.
Shaleh was among six people inside his hotel room when he was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping members of the group of teenagers known as the Islamic State, local police said.
According to police, Shaleh, who was a college student before becoming a police officer, was at the hotel in an apartment building when she was shot early Wednesday night.
She was rushed to The Westin hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. Shaleh was listed in critical condition at the time of her arrest, police said.
According to police, his identity has yet to be released, and officials said they could not provide further details on the investigation.
According to Aharonot, Shaleh graduated from Yatavon high school in 2013, and has lived in the neighborhood for several years since then.
He was a very good kid, Aharonot’s sister, Tamara Shaleh, told The Associated Press. I saw his first kiss.
Shaleh, who was working as a clerk while at the same local high school, told her sister in Arabic that someone had opened fire in a place full of people of different opinions, who will probably be killed.
The Palestinian student had been living in the Kishim area of Tel Aviv since before he was recruited by the Islamic State in early 2014. Police have been tracking his movements since March 2015, according to their website.
Authorities said that Shaleh’s two sons, who were also with him, were living with his parents in Yatta in Jerusalem, where he grew up. They said he had met his sister when they were two years young.
Police said Shaleh’s death left them questioning whether he was trying to incite violence.
Palestinian officials also said he and the young men in his family was a threat to local residents, and accused him of being an Israeli terrorist who posed a threat while he was serving his sentence. He was freed from his Israeli prison in April 2015.
