As part of the effort to reduce traffic accidents, the City of Berkeley is working with other local agencies and partners to reduce traffic crashes and injuries.

The Downtown Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition (DBCMP) will be launching the Bike to Work initiative next week, which aims to build relationships at the City of Berkeley’s new pedestrian-heavy sidewalks and ramps with other community and business initiatives.

After four years of working with Berkeley, Bicycle, and Pedestrian groups, the Downtown Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition expects to launch a new initiative early in 2017 to add a pedestrian-friendly bicycle trail along the University of California-Irvine corridor to the city’s north side.

Right now, we have a big plan with pedestrians one, to use bike lanes in the middle of downtown to make sure drivers and bicycle traffic don’t just get into the wrong way, but that cyclists won’t get into a wrong way, said John Mabry, senior partner, Downtown Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition at the City of Berkeley.

The campaign kicks off this spring.

People will tell you that a pedestrian needs to get to an intersection where he should not get hit, but it would take us at least five years of hard work to actually get cyclists to the intersection. So what we want to do is be proactive, like they had, and help people in Berkeley develop their own strategies in place to protect themselves. That’s the goal for Downtown Bicycle and Pedestrian, Mabry said.

That could include building new bicycle lanes, improving traffic signals between city and county roads, and building new bike lanes throughout the street corridor.

Bike routes will be located at sidewalks along University of California-Irvine Boulevard and the north side of the University, where drivers can see more people, reduce crosswalks, and make their way safely to work.

A pedestrian-friendly bicycle trail will replace existing pedestrian markings at the intersections north and south of University, making it safer for cyclists to turn left, and will also allow less cars to cross the street.

With a new trail planned for next year, the Downtown Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition plans to use the funds from the bike lanes to expand the bike lane and build a new bike line south to UCB Park, the
