The main part is to know whether the Buddha is an embodiment of truth. If you say that Buddhists think Buddha is ineffable, then you’re saying that you don’t want to understand it, that you don’t believe that the Buddha is an embodiment of truth, or that you don’t accept the Buddha as an embodiment of truth. The Buddha may very well be an embodiment of truth, but the Buddha isn’t the embodiment of truth. That’s the difference.

When I say we’ll have a general understanding of Buddha in the next couple of months, if this becomes clear, then I think that Buddhism can be viewed as a non-Buddhist philosophical religion, although it may have a particular point of view that I’m unable to support. It is very much, very complex, with different beliefs and styles. I really believe Buddhism as an ideology, not as a religion. So the question for me is what should Buddhism look like in the second half of the twenty-first century Do we find ourselves in an era when an individual can become what we imagine Buddhists are going to be in the next twenty-five years The answer to that is an absolute non-Buddhist, not to mention non-scientific viewpoint.

But, for those who are thinking of Buddhism this is an issue of self-understanding. What I look for in Buddhism is it’s more of a conceptual one and not an analytical one, and I’m not really sure that I get that, but I think that it’s important. It’s not as if my thinking is more Buddhist about Buddhism. It’s more Buddhist about my self, and that is my real value, or value of the non-Buddhist viewpoint.

For the sake of this interview that will be taken in another short episode, I’ll ask you what’s the best path for you to take with Buddhism in the next few years. Why do you think, in the ten years we’ve been in the Buddhist world for the last five or six years, what is the best path for people to take in the next ten years

For me, the real point is that Buddhist thought and culture has been very well nurtured for five years now. Many Buddhist writers and historians have a kind of, Oh, my son, I just wrote a book about Buddhism. Let me tell you what Buddhist thought is. But my own view on meditation is much more different from what they do sometimes. I think that people have really developed
