An Iowa state law bans pollination of lotus plants. A federal amendment to that law was filed last fall in an effort to stop the practice. The amendment to the law now must be approved by the House and Senate Agriculture Committees before it can be sent to Obama for Senate ratification.

The state also had to wait two hours to make a decision on whether it would take action against a group of growers who had begun the process of harvesting a species of lotus that could be considered native species and be listed as a foodborne illness in the federal law. The Iowa Legislature approved the bill last week.

The state’s Department of Health is making progress, according to a statement on its website. The state will also continue to investigate how it may determine whether it’s doing enough to protect its own wildlife.
