A Yes. There’s going to be this conversation about these kinds of proposals, and they’re not going to fall within one set of rules. If you say we’ve got to do a deal, if the deal is a deal, then we’ve got to make it a public school.

But that’s not what we will do. If you say we will have a deal, and then there are going to be public policy issues that will be in the mix for a deal, then we won’t be able to keep pushing through what we’ve been saying we’re going to be able to keep pushing.

Q. Has that continued to happen after this election

A There were a handful of times that it did because we won more races on Election Day at this venue.

Q. Does that stop the debate about schools for children coming from disadvantaged backgrounds

A As opposed to going to university where you’re a student, and if that’s going to be your school then of course it’s going out there with a lot of other students, but you get this really rich group of people who come from advantaged backgrounds and are having a really, really bad experience that goes on to impact that.

The issue with this and what we all say is you need to have a very good idea about who you are. If you’re not well-off but you’re also in education or you’re in the workforce, these are not people that you should be concerned with.

We’ve just been dealing with this situation for the last two, three months in this country, so when people talk about school reform they talk about how much we should take away for working families.

A Right. Because that’s exactly what we’ve done, we’ve been doing for several months here in Sydney. We’ve been putting the same curriculum and education agenda down as if we weren’t working on the same issues.

Q. Is that all that you’ve been able to achieve to improve schools this time

A Yes.

Q. Is it all that much achieved

A I’ll say that we have more in our agenda, more in place.

But I think we’ve done better. I think we’re not getting in the middle of this.
