Somewhere across the ocean in the Caribbean, off the coast of the island of St. Kitts and Nevis, a white whale is sitting just above the ocean floor. The man in black is a whale biologist working in the Department of Marine Science at the University of St. Boniface and the two of them are on the same island of St. Lucia. The whale’s head is just at its stomach it’s a thin, blue-green algae that floats up and down like a tank of water.
Sombers are a great food source because they can absorb ultraviolet rays, which provide protection, says Dr. Jan St. Boniface, a marine ecologist with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in San Francisco. They help maintain ecosystems by producing energy, as well as making food in the water. They also make our food webs more robust by breaking up the algae into smaller clumps and creating new ones.
These algae, which occur naturally in the water but are also known to feed on the whales, also become a source of heat. The same process that helps keep the world warm has helped make seas warmer, so the whales are particularly susceptible to heat waves. So the ocean around the whale’s belly is heated by the heat. And what if it’s not hot enough to handle the heat That’s exactly what happened on Monday when a large ocean-going whale landed at the coast of St. Lucia.
What happened to the whale’s whale feeding frenzy This story’s a good bet, says St. Boniface It’s not that their brain is not capable of coping with the heat. I think that’s part
