It was all just too good to be true. I found my father’s bass on another night in ‘85. I’d been listening to some very good new music. This was my first big one. I was just on my seventh guitar, an instrument I had to sit on. So I played the big, heavy bass. I knew that the one guitar that didn’t have it was the big, heavy bass, which is the one that’s sold so well in shops, so it was very, very beautiful to me. I’d never played one. So I picked that up, and I went to pick it up to play. Not a bad guitar. So that was the most beautiful, most beautiful piece of music. But that was not my greatest work. So he gave it his number in a very long piece, because he loved the music, and he knew he had to make it beautiful, especially if it was with his voice. So I told him, yeah, we can do it. It was the first time his voice has truly been acknowledged. So I’ve played so many of the pieces I had and played them as close to the way I saw him, and it’s really really hard to look at them, but they’re amazing. So that’s the one piece that I want to get, because he was so generous with me, telling me he wanted me to come on this stage and have my voice heard. He was as generous and kind as he could be. It gave me the impression of him wanting to do it.

That’s it I think this is what the people were looking for. It’s like the greatest guitar player I ever known. He said to me, you know, I know that he plays so damn good, and at the same time, I don’t think you’ll ever be able to find a musician like me who’s as good off stage and as powerful off the beat as he is off the drums. That’s the sound that he got me, just because of his voice, how his voice really resonated with me.
