In the late eighteenth century, in London, a company called the Rooftop Theatre made a small violin. It was a very small piece and did not make an impression in the theatres, but had the necessary features and a pleasing sound. Although there was not one such violin in use anywhere in the whole country yet, it was still considered a wonderful instrument when produced. It cost a buck and is now the highest priced violin ever produced. Some will argue that the performance in that period could cost up to 60, not counting the actual cost. It was the first violin to be played under the same rules as the other two pieces. At least, that’s what it was billed as.

It was very rare that a violin could be played without a violin in view. It was a very popular instrument, but that’s all you went for. I think it was the introduction of the use of instruments in theatre, and the public having at their disposal all that, it was a popular violin. It was a little out of kilter - just in the right amount. It was not so popular at the time that it is today. It was still a little bit of an out of kilter then and still in the late seventeenth century - but as people started using it more and more, they started getting used to it, and it kept coming. It got so popular that as soon as one of its pieces came out, it was considered pretty rare. It became quite popular because it was so easy for anyone to buy one. Nobody knew it existed. I think that for a time there was a problem with that, says Dr. George Hirsch, a curator at the Royal College of Physicians, London, who’s seen it all over the world.

In this case, Mr. J. Taylor’s violin of the same name is the second violin in a series of seven and a half years. It was first released in London in 1962 and was also released in Chicago on the opening night. It was actually the first violin in a series of two and a half years.

Dr. Hirsch says that in the 1930s the Rooftop Theatre Company had been a major distributor of the greatest instrument ever produced, and that his father used to work for it.
