A few years ago I attended a symposium in Amsterdam that featured the violin as a model for musicians. The speaker was Dr. Jan Baudrouke, PhD and a violinist with over thirty years of expertise, while talking about his study of two different violins (I.A.S.). The violin model was interesting, and it made sense to me. However, the performance of violins was in doubt, and it took a PhD candidate to come up with a more concrete (but simple) test that could help to resolve these issues.

Dr. Jan Baudrouke is one of music scientists who have studied violin for 15 years. He taught violin playing during his graduate training at the university’s University of Basel and went on to have a very successful career. Since then he has been a professor of theoretical music, a research chemist, a graduate student, a research associate at the National Institute of Economic Sciences, and has been instrumental in helping universities and artists solve problems that many researchers struggle to solve using a sound analysis model and sound model in concert. He was recently featured on the Top 50 Music Professionals on the list of Most Influential Music Scientist of 2017 on this summer’s National Science Foundation of America’s Fellow in the Music and Engineering Research Section. He is part of the University of Basel University’s Faculty of Music Research.
