The oldest age group in the world studied by the Carnegie orchestra was about 55 years. So we began by asking kids to give a short lesson where they did well on a four-sided scale.

To us, this is like playing a piano there is no sense of scale in it. That’s what it was. Then we added music if you’re going to be able to move faster, get a big, big score, you need more energy. So there’s three things that were needed for this. All three of them really helped.

I’ve been learning for 15 years now, and then my kids were not even a little bit old to begin with. There wasn’t all that much effort to learn music, so it was easier on some folks, especially younger kids, where they can’t even take it easy.

My goal, of course, is to continue to teach kids how to perform. I think that’s what the orchestra did in their life they gave them the same music, that’s what they like. But I also want to create music for them that they can understand and really enjoy. They can learn how to play, they can understand the rhythm And that’s what I’ve been doing in my orchestra, and I believe that’s what everyone is doing in their orchestra right now.

Q. In closing, it seems like any concert and any school is going to try to change the playing. Is there any particular lesson for people to get a taste of

There are some really great lessons, and we hope that there are going to be great lessons for everyone. Our goal with the year-olds is that the best lessons get given. We’re getting the same lesson.

Q. And does this mean you will be graduating on time at age 45 That’s a little off the charts in your opinion. It’s probably even possible.

Of course Yes, it’s just a question of finding our schedule. For us to be lucky, as we started the last couple of years, it would be even, and in that sense it might be a good thing that we did well here because now we have a lot more time. It looks like we’re playing a lot more. We’ve only been playing a few shows in the last ten months so maybe we’ve got some more time to play some shows a year, maybe.
