President Barack Obama issued his Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday, but the president’s decision comes as Congress looks into the fallout at his National Security Agency surveillance program, in which Americans have been asked to hand over their communications and bank accounts to federal authorities.

In a lengthy letter, Holder said the government would need the NSA’s authority to decrypt, intercept, and store all communications of Americans over a period of at least seven years to determine what they were carrying and who was actually being targeted without warrants. What’s even more troubling is the fact that Obama’s memo is largely written in a language that’s virtually unheard of in the Obama era, and that’s what could explain the lack of an action by Congress. It’s an extremely troubling sign of how little oversight and oversight by the government has been given to the Obama administration over its use of the NSA as a tool for surveillance of Americans, or even counterterrorism of its own.
