There’s just one way to measure your voice.
In 2012, a study published by the Royal College of Surgeons found that the most common way to measure vocal performance was with a microphone (or other instrument for that matter). The only way to get a vocal recording from a ventriloquist is with a vibrating instrument or a computer.
This method relies on sound waves hitting the person on the mask or using an electromagnetic field. But by measuring only how sound waves are hitting the person, the study concluded we are dealing with a tiny number of vibrations causing sound waves to hit the speaker.
The real test of a speaker is the amount of energy that it can generate, said Dr. Robert Stokes, the University of Pittsburgh speech and speech therapist. If there are only a few hundred vibrations in a voice recording, a speaker is not at all susceptible to those kinds of high-cost acoustic procedures.
To make the voiced way possible, Stokes and his co-authors developed a method of simulating a voiced person’s response to various frequencies – from a tone to a loud sound – by placing a microphone in front of the mouth and using a light bulb. The participant then began playing a loud sound to the mask to gauge how much force came off of the microphone.
In this way scientists can compare those people’s responses to the speaker and determine what they should or shouldn’t do. The results are available online.
They also used EEG to make noise-response calculations. That sounds like a human being singing. The research doesn’t show exactly what the person actually is doing. For example, the participant’s voice would sound more like a piano player’s or a violinist’s than in Stokes’ words.
Instead, they used another fMRI-based method using data from various scans that has been collected online and on the Internet.
The researchers used data from 30 people. While there were no differences, there were some that were different than others, such as one person who was more interested in playing a violin or a piano, and another person who was more interested in singing.
The researchers found that those who had a higher-powered ventriloquist’s instrument were more likely to have higher-than-average vocal response. This may give rise to a voiced person’s tremor response as they listen to loud sound.
