After months of controversy over its ingredients, the Food and Drug Administration is back for a review of new, low-calorie sweeteners. In a 5-2 decision on Tuesday, the FDA said it would begin to change its labeling of some of its sweeteners including orange, avocado, and grapes starting in October.

The decision is about whether the FDA can regulate them as sweeteners. Its two previous decisions had required manufacturers to report on the effects from their product, but with the addition of the new rules the agency now is requiring manufacturers to label the sweeteners for the general public a step that would allow consumers to know what’s in their drinks.
