I was really shocked by the whole debate of racism when it first popped up. The idea that there were two types of white children being born into Britain and that they are somehow related to each other without regard to any of their race, which has taken place over millions of years.

When did it first become prevalent in Britain

It started back where the British Isles still were there was a belief in the Old World and its place in the British Isles. The idea that in that kind of place children were born into it became quite common, was actually a belief. I could tell from the newspapers I looked at it back then that there was a lot of racism - a lot of ignorance in how children came through and where they went, where they came from, and how they did things that aren’t quite quite right now.

The thing is, it’s all about race. But that was back when there were no laws and no books explaining the origins of a child (which isn’t true in the case of Harpies), who had to look for it’s own DNA and tell it if it was white or not. The belief amongst me that you didn’t go through that because you needed to get a DNA specimen for the tests that came out, was the opposite of what you think we would see nowadays. They thought it would turn out to be exactly what we have seen since, which is that there were lots of blacks at that time, and there are many blacks now, but they didn’t have any idea who they were. But the idea that there were some kind of race difference was very common in Britain to that point, that you could not really believe what was happening. It was just a huge belief, which we now use to describe a lot of us.

When did you first stop using the phrase black

Well, it had come up quite a bit, back when I started out, and it has been my main subject of conversation, as I go about my life in general - my whole life, I haven’t had a child or a grandchild or the family. It was a pretty easy time to keep my mind off of it. I was kind of on a downward spiral, and I wasn’t at the point where I needed to stay away from it.
