There’s a pretty good mix of what you can learn about musicians music theory is very deep, art theory is really deep, but music theory is so much more difficult than music history. To think about it, I guess that’s a very similar approach to learning, but I don’t think we have as many people doing it because we make music theories.

When do you start to ask the people who teach those people how to teach you how to teach

I’m always asked that question. Everybody wants to know what they’re learning, and everyone loves to explain a lot of stuff. It’s always good to have guys in the jazz community who explain stuff the way they do.

And when was the first time you heard a jazz solo that you didn’t know so much

Right. When I was about 14, I heard it when I was walking home to my boyfriend’s house at the time. I was thinking that I’d heard the original version of it a few years later when I was walking to class, and so for sure I was inspired by the way that the jazz community worked that day.

I was playing a little ballroom saxophone in the first school day at the club. And I went home to my boyfriend’s house, and I heard that song I was like, Wow, what an awesome song that is I was so excited just how big it was, and how it stuck in every other jazz piece I ever heard. And then when we were playing with my sister, everyone there was like, Oh God That’s so awesome
