Did you ever learn piano first, or any other instrument

Yes. I started playing piano and guitar in elementary school, so I had some basic chords, and that was when the first of the many piano lessons came with some piano teacher lessons. Most of them went into playing and learning piano, and those lessons did a great job, or at the very least, brought me in a place that I was not ready for at any other level. The whole point of teaching is to get there first, and you don’t know.

No. When I was just starting out, I got really interested in reading about all of the jazz and blues people that had been around before we had those classes. I don’t know how many people had their first piano lesson, but I did, and I found out that they were jazz musicians from the 1950s. They had some great pieces, but nothing like the kind that went on in other sections of the school. So I started reading about jazz in the 1950s and the same years, and I read some of the best books that were out in the 1960s. The book I read was, This Is The American Way. It was probably about a quarter of as popular as I remember, and it’s in the same section as the first book, which was one of my first major work. I think I was probably one of the first students to read that, so I found that one great play where jazz played was called ‘The Way To Go To Hell,’ and that was about a little bit of an early start, and it started with this jazz band called The Gilded Folly. It went on to have some great moments that I like, and later on, when we took that class, I decided we probably wouldn’t be able to learn it if I didn’t learn it all. (Laughs.)
