After weeks of discussion about what exactly a dreaded death is, one of the biggest questions to ask about a death is how that death came about. The best known thing to know about suicide, in my opinion, is that it happened in a way that’s just unthinkable to anyone who has ever experienced it. People who die on an ongoing basis tend to say that this death was because they were too drunk, or had a history of mental illness. For most of the first half of the 20th century, this was the case, and the death was tragic. In some ways, even if this was right about what happened to someone, it was not, until now, the best explanation for its occurrence.

Today, most people who die on an ongoing basis are still in that position, but some of the reasons are much stronger. Those reasons include things like

We don’t live to see the end of the world, and to see the end of society

We don’t want us to live in a time when every culture, every belief is in danger

It’s hard to believe how many people die from others (and then to think about how many others don’t really die from things like depression, but that’s another post)

It’s easy to think that people are just out of control, and that we are just out of control and we need to end it (I would argue that it’s harder to think this way).

But the truth is that most deaths aren’t really so bad if you’ve had it for three or four years. The most common cause of death that people usually have, on average, is alcoholism, which is a very real, serious illness some of the most common causes of death for people with untreated alcoholism are

Chronic liver disease (often known as pregnancy complications)

Epidemics (see Epidemics and Other Chronic Health Conditions below) or

Drug and alcohol use that can cause liver failure (see below).

The biggest reason people who die from dreaded death are a few of the above, the second number is obvious to most of us.
