I wanted to give the piano more power. It was an opportunity to be an accidental pianist. I wanted to play with instruments. I don’t play instruments because I don’t have time. Was there anything you really liked about playing, including the fact that you were a white male

There was nothing I liked about playing. I just thought that I was not good enough for society. It was one thing to make a name for oneself as a pianistto be able to represent the music and to represent someone who worked hard enough in order to get to the top.

How did you feel about the role you played for the black jazz scene in New Orleans

I felt really uncomfortable about all the things I had in common with the black musicians. To be black is a good way to live. It was so frustrating. Everybody seemed to think I was some kind of nigger.
