One of my primary goals when learning to play is to teach the way my brain does all of its work. It’s not something that my teachers and instructors want me to learn. I like to see things and make my own decisions. I enjoy the process of getting better or getting better. The best part of learning is learning through your parents’ example. The fact that you understand the problems you’re dealing with as a child and teach them. That’s important to me.

In my younger days, my parents taught me to always play in different areas and that just led me off to practice and practice all the time. They knew that I needed to go out to take a break and do my own research to find out if they were actually right or wrong. They had no idea that their teacher might have this same idea and even had to be told no, so it wasn’t a good idea. It seems really unfortunate but they helped me through a lot. It was my mom who finally did a lot of research.

Did you have any advice for people who might have questions about learning piano as children

We had a great time. I learned, in every way, that the good things that I learned from my mom were good too. She took us through a lot. This is not necessarily a matter of being perfect, but taking things away from the mistakes that your parents made, even if you can be very clever. It took me awhile to learn how to actually play the instrument. It took a bit of discipline but I finally learned how to take my time while it was going along.

As for having one day like that when you’re not at home

I feel a bit guilty about it. Even though I had a friend who is a pianist she thought it was bad to hear me sing after practice for the first time since I started piano lessons. I’m probably not quite there yet but I guess you could say I feel really good.

How do you find time to work on your music

Once I started playing to new people, playing is no longer the way to learn, you should be able to do more than just play, you should feel more of the things you’ve been taught and feel that there is no point doing anything else. It’s as if you’ve learned to not only sing, but to sing too.
