The U.S. government says this week it is exploring a possible settlement with a German company that claims that it illegally imported nuclear-powered nuclear power units to make nuclear-powered missiles. The announcement comes as the U.S. government grapples with allegations of widespread theft and other alleged crimes involving state-owned nuclear plants, which are also alleged to be used for military purposes.
German defense minister Ursula von der Leyen has already said she will not be at loggerheads over the fallout from what she calls a systematic violation of her own security laws, reports The Associated Press.
The Nuclear Threat Reduction Agency, an international body, last month published a report recommending ways to protect the U.S. homeland from nuclear weapons.
It said that the U.S. had to be prepared to confront a threat of nuclear attack when in power if possible.
Germany sent up to 500,000 of its nuclear weapons to Europe in 2009 and again last year. There have also been allegations of a systematic and continuing increase in the number of nuclear-powered accidents in Europe. German officials have denied such a problem exists.
The U.S. Justice Department declined to comment on the reports, but U.S. officials have insisted that their agency was monitoring what happened and that their agents did not know of any previous violations in Germany.
The reports suggest the U.S. government is now reviewing the U.S’ existing safety measures, as well as possibly implementing new ones to protect its homeland from nuclear weapons. The U.S. is also considering new rules for companies like Siemens AG, which is also alleged to have used nuclear power plants and other assets to make nuclear-powered missiles.
A spokesman for the German defense ministry said at the time, The decision is fully our responsibility. He declined to comment on other aspects of the alleged case but said Germany had long been considering a possible settlement with the government.
The German company is not the only one accused of widespread theft and other misconduct by state-owned nuclear plants.
In May, the German government said it had arrested a former U.S. nuclear security officer in Germany who had sold parts of nuclear warheads to German intelligence agencies for decades under false names. Authorities said he pleaded guilty in August.
