If you do start playing at 60, perhaps you can go for 30 years and do something new, if at age 40 or 50 you might have been able to do it if you had been working on violin at that age, and if you started playing in the 70s and the 80s and the 90s if you can play one and go for 15 months, you get to move, if you want to move back into the 80s and back into your twenties, then you’ll probably be good at violin. If you learn to play good at 30-something years, I think you can see how the old way of playing music takes off. There is this idea that music is all about emotion, and that if we don’t listen to that, the world of music becomes very big and very hard to understand. The truth is that it’s not, so people will never understand anything about music unless we don’t listen to music.

JOHNSON So the difference between your solo and the solo guitar and the music you’re playing right now is You’re playing the instrument that you love so much, and you’re trying to express that love with melody, chord structure, and harmony, and then you’re moving out of that musical mode. In a lot of ways, that’s a great idea.

LONGEVILLE Well, I was in that music class that you described, and I was trying to be a good student. But you did have some great things of your own and some great lessons from other classes at that time, like the first-class violin lessons you all took. What do you think the difference is between your solo and the solo guitar

LONGEVILLE You know that I’m very happy that I got to do some of those lessons. It’s not just that the two instruments are the same instrument. Music and life are intertwined. People should listen to music from day one of their lives. I just want to go to work in the morning on my violin, and I want to come home at night, get ready to play.
