The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday made a rare challenge of a state law that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

The U.S. Supreme Court, which made its order last week, said same-sex couples have the same right not to wed or get married to same-sex couples.

The case, which was appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit, was based on a 1986 Supreme Court ruling that declared marriage as between two men and two women, not a legally defined definition of the couple. The justices decided that the federal government could regulate both legal relationships as defined by the federal Constitution and the state’s laws that define marriage.

It is not surprising, therefore, that many states, as well as many individual states have enacted laws to redefine marriage or define marriages between men and women by means different from the federal government’s statutory definition, the Supreme Court read the case.

The justices ruled in favor of the State of Connecticut, which says in its constitution that marriage is and always has been a union of one man and one woman for a limited period of time.

Their ruling, issued in Washington, D.C., on Friday, made the federal government’s definition of marriage difficult to enforce.
