The Pipeline (formerly Highway 95) and The Traffic Tunnel (known as Pipeline) of the Columbia River Gorge will eventually merge in the Columbia River Gorge National Park, a 1.5 billion project announced on Tuesday.

In addition to having two important natural systems at stake, the park will produce a tolerable amount of water by pumping sediment under the riverbank while pumping natural gas and petroleum gas for development.

The park received 1.55 million in federal subsidies for construction of the proposed pipeline between Portland and Seattle. State and federal agencies pledged more than 800 million to the project, as well as 500 thousand to other states as well.

This will bring our economy into the 21st century, Obama said. Not only will the Columbia River Gorge give our world a chance to get back on its feet but it will also save it.

The 1.5 billion project will result in the first ever federal-grant pipeline project that provides direct access to the U.S. federal government’s natural systems, said Brian Kowalczyk, president and CEO of the Wilderness Coalition. Together, we’ll save the Columbia River Gorge and the region’s biodiversity.

The pipeline project has also been lauded for its potential to reduce methane emissions, while also being commercially viable.
