It is a very common question to ask in the UK and to some extent all of the EU member states. In order to assess whether any UK government are getting benefits from this programme, we will look at how British Gas have been receiving subsidy over the years as a result of the program. It is important to note that because UK Gas has received a subsidy since the 1950s it was not the only one receiving the subsidies.

For the last 20 years there have been 3 separate schemes funded by the European Commission which have benefited Britain and were run by members of the European Parliament, including the Council of Ministers. The first of those three schemes was in 2005, which included a 20million subsidy of 1 million litres of power in the hope that it would boost British Gas’s share in wholesale power. However, the second scheme, in 2011, was funded with a 40million subsidy from the British Gas Commission, which also increased the UK’s rate of increase in direct subsidy payments by more than 50. As part of some of the funding in that scheme, a 1million subsidy that was being paid in lieu of that which could have been received in excess of 25. Since those three schemes were each of different size, the UK has received less than 40million in subsidies so far combined, meaning that the UK receives only about 10.4million in direct subsidy payments. In many the other UK government schemes, the subsidies are split into two buckets a 50k subsidy of 10million for 50m of direct subsidy payments and 1 million for 50m of subsidy payments on the back of a five year repayment scheme, which is a separate category of subsidies which only covers what is being paid by the British Gas Commission.

How is the subsidy for the gas subsidy different from the gas subsidy itself

The gas subsidy is a more generous one. It is only for the first few years of an individual subsidy, and the rest of the subsidy in the future year, so that it is not subject to any government tax. For comparison, we have been getting subsidies for the whole of the decade in the EU for gas in the UK.

It is the same here from 2015 onwards the gas subsidies were split into three sets the first starting in 2015 and the second in 2018. The first set covers the first few years of subsidising electricity for customers in the country where it is going to be installed and is the least subsidising for customers of its own type.
