With two of Canada’s largest oil producers working together to create the world’s most advanced shale revolution, and China becoming one of the world’s most energy-efficient countries this post will try to address what’s driving those global trends why we may need oil. It is our current reliance on petroleum, which is the single source of supply for a lot of our energy, and it will take some time to turn our energy supply into a fully renewable, sustainable energy source on a global scale. It will also be a difficult, slow and often difficult balancing act.

But just as our resources will be needed in a very short time a few years if it is still sustainable oil will be available.

The world needs to be prepared to face a new set of challenges which must be overcome in the next decade.

1) There’s a lot of oil that will be needed to get oil out of the ground

As this transition to renewables begins, production of crude oil (not to mention liquids) will be much higher than ever before. The oil supply will eventually be cut completely and a major source of demand for natural gas will shift to oil as a way to make up for shortages in the market.

However, all of this will take time. It will take more work to build up reserves of oil, but at the same time our world will need far more supplies of crude oil than ever before.

We’ll need the oil right now to go where the market would be able to go. We’re going to need as much as there are resources available that are still in our pockets to do so. And by a great deal we mean as much as 40 years from now, and possibly further.

We’re getting there. We’ve already started.
